«Do you recognize?»
This year’s autumn treats me so warm,
comes suddenly from behind, covers my eyes -
«do you recognize?» - so guileless,
like an old lady, who tries to look younger,
with her trembling hands.
«Do you recognize?» - her ingratiating breath
touches my hair.
her last, fading passion
is pitiful, yet funny.
I remember the other autumns -
they once could make me kneel and bow,
what do I say now to these begging eyes,
«I don’t recall» - and walk away?
She sighs and curses her old god,
annoyed by my audacity,
as if I am in fact an heir
to her gallant throne.
